The Basics

What is a germ?

A germ is a type of particle or organism that when it gets into your body it causes infection or disease (makes you sick). There are germs everywhere in the world - on plants, animals, tables, doors, soil... the list goes on. A germ can be a bacteria, virus, protist, fungus, or helminths (parasitic worms).

Most germs do not make you sick. Your immune system is able to defend your body before you get sick with those germs.
